Homelessness is a problem only in large urban areas. The homeless are found in small towns, rural areas,
and affluent suburbs as well as cities.
Few children are homeless. Children make up at least 20% of the homeless population.
Families with children are the fastest growing group
of homeless persons.
Homeless people are to blame for their own situation. Most homeless people are victims. Some have suffered
from child abuse or domestic violence. 20% are children.
Many are elderly or mentally ill. Many have lost their
jobs after years of employment. All have lost their homes.
Homeless people want to live that way. Less than 6% of all homeless people are
homeless by choice.
The homeless are uneducated and unemployable. Many homeless persons have completed high school
and some have even attended college and graduate school,
Homeless people don’t want to work. 30% of the homeless are employed on a full-time
or part-time basis. Someone who works full-time
at a minimum wage job is at great risk for being
homeless today.
